Information for Patients

Ty Bryn Surgery is a GP Training practice. GP registrars spend either 6 or 12 months at the surgery. The doctors who come to the surgery are fully qualified doctors with experience in hospital medicine and they are training to become GPs. As a patient you will be offered appointments with the GP registrar and you may also be asked if the GP registrar can video the consultation. All video recordings are strictly confidential and are used for teaching or exam purposes only.

Information for Doctors

Ty Bryn Surgery is part of the Gwent Vocational Training Scheme. We are the closest practice on the scheme to Cardiff. Dr Alun Edwards and Dr Siaron West are the current GP Trainers.

Information for Patients

As a practice we enjoy teaching the third year medical students from the University Hospital of Wales. Occasionally, we may ask your permission for two of the students to be present when you are seeing the doctor. It is of enormous benefit to the students to learn from you in this way, but we will always respect your decision if you do not feel comfortable with this.

We are approximately 25 minutes from the Heath Hospital by car. The easiest ways to get to us are:

Approaching Trethomas from Caerphilly on the A468

Drive towards Newport. Pass the junction for Bedwas village and take the next turning on the left (Parklands Nursing Home should be on your left). Then, almost immediately, turn right and drive past the Bedwas Workmans Hall. Follow the road around until you see the pharmacy and Ty Bryn Surgery on your left.

Approaching Trethomas from Newport on the A468

Drive through the village of Trethomas until the Bedwas Workmans Hall is viewed on your right - take the next turning on the right (you should see Parklands Nursing Home on your left hand side).

Almost immediately turn right again and drive past Bedwas Workmans Hall. Follow the road around until you see the pharmacy and Ty Bryn Surgery on your left.

Surgeries

During the week you will sit in with the GPs in the practice. The surgeries are shortened to allow you to ask questions and for you to meet interesting patients and take relevant histories and examinations.

We would like to show you around the premises and introduce you to our team. It would therefore be helpful if you could arrive a little earlier on your first day.

Tutorials

During your placement we would hope to cover the following subjects again. Please let us know if there are other areas that you feel would be helpful to you at this stage. We would value your feedback.

• Examination of the eyes, fundoscopy and visual acuity
• Examination of the ENT system
• Examination of the knee and elbow
• Rectal examination
• Measuring blood pressure
• Urinalysis ? interpretation of
• Interpreting blood results

The Long Case

This needs to be kept simple. We will try and find you a long case early in your attachment. Don’t panic, there will be a choice of cases and we will guide you through the process. It is helpful for us to give you some time alone with your chosen patient and to ask their permission to be contacted by phone should you wish to ask them any questions later on when you come to write the case up.

You have very detailed guidelines for preparing your case in your handbooks.

Examples of suitable cases include; otitis media, tonsillitis, back pain, headache, chest pain, breast lump. The simple cases are often easier to write up.

Don’t forget to bring your confirmation form for this as it will need signing by us.

Assessment

At the end of your two week attachment with us we will complete your assessment forms. It will help us if you arrive in enough time for the surgeries, are dressed appropriately and communicate to us any difficulties that you may be having.

Above all, we hope that you will enjoy your time with us and we are sure that you will have plenty of opportunities to practice your skills.

Your clinical tutor is Dr Alun Edwards, but your teaching will also be organized by Drs Gaynor Penrose, Marilyn Palmer and Tina Gordon.
